The drains of your home are like the arteries of your body; when you have one clog, it upsets the entire plumbing system of your home.
And just like the circulation system in your body, each part of your plumbing system is connected, and what connects your plumbing together is your sewer drainage system.
This is the basis of why F.H. Furr created Rooter-MedX. Instead of looking at individual clogged drains, we look at the entire system as a whole.
Clogged drains or slow-draining pipes can lead to poor or inconsistent water flow, and that potentially causes complications with the entire plumbing system over time. What may start as a single slow sink can point to deeper buildup, partial blockages, or restrictions further down the line, especially when multiple drains are affected. Our Fairfax clogged drain technicians can quickly help you determine the reason your drains are having issues and then come up with a solution so that your home’s drainage system functions as it was meant to.
Most clogged drains begin when some form of debris is washed down the sink, getting lodged in one of the elbows.
Over time, these materials can accumulate and harden, narrowing the pipe opening and increasing the risk of recurring clogs or backups. Here is a list of some of the common items that should never be washed down the drain:
- Oil or grease
- Gummy foods like pasta
- Kitty litter
- Paint or chemicals, in general
- Hair
When these materials remain in the plumbing system, they often require professional drain cleaning to fully remove the blockage and restore proper flow.
Many clogged drains can be remedied by you without the help of a Plumber or Rooterologist™ as long as you use the right equipment or items.
- Check and see if it is easy to reach hair or soap clogs in the bath or shower. It can easily be checked by removing the drain screen.
- Use a store-bought sewer snake or even bent wire to grab and pull out the clog.
- Use a proper sink plunger and try plunging with about an inch of water in the bottom of the sink.
- Cover the overflow holes with a wet rag or tape.
- If water begins backing up into other fixtures, drains slowly after repeated attempts, or you notice odors or gurgling sounds, stop and contact a professional to avoid further damage.

Preventive plumbing maintenance is vital for making sure your home’s system is healthy and working as efficiently as possible.
At least once a year, your home’s plumbing and drain system should be checked and cleaned for maximum usage and to be ahead of the game if anything comes up. Regular maintenance can help identify buildup, root intrusion risks, or developing restrictions before they lead to major drainage issues. This is especially important when it comes to locations lined with tree roots or bushes.
Clogged Drains Can Happen At Any Time…
Be prepared!
With every drain cleaning or clogged drain, our Rooterologists™ will make sure you are educated about your plumbing system, especially when it comes to your main shutoff valves. Understanding how your system is laid out and where key controls are located can help minimize disruption if a drainage issue escalates. F.H. Furr has made sure each home’s valve is properly valve tagged, and he does this “ABSOLUTELY” FREE of charge.
