NADCA-certified Duct Cleaning
Duct Cleaning: One of the Most Important Indoor Air Quality Services in the DC Metro Area
F.H. Furr Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning & Electrical has been northern Virginia and Maryland’s number one HVAC service professional for over 30 years, so when we say we know our stuff, you can be sure we do.
At F.H. Furr, we live and breathe HVAC, and that includes all aspects of your home’s airflow. While many homeowners think of heating and cooling when we say “HVAC,” they should really consider ductwork as part of that equation.
Keeping your air ducts clean will protect your family from airborne allergens and harmful debris and will help keep your HVAC system working at peak efficiency, saving you money each month. At F.H. Furr, your comfort is important to us. If your ducts need a deep cleaning, we can help.
The Importance of Duct Cleaning
According to the American Lung Association, most people spend 60–90% of their time indoors. This means the quality of the air you’re breathing in your home should be of the utmost importance, and duct cleaning is a vital part of maintaining your indoor air quality.
In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt in your ductwork, there are potential factors that can increase the need for air duct cleaning:
- Pet hair and dander
- Allergens and irritants
- Microbial growth
- Household dust
- Smoke and cooking odors
- Renovations or construction dust
How Does Duct Cleaning Work?
F.H. Furr uses the National Air Duct Cleaners Association’s (NADCA’s) certified cleaning process with two key components:
- Breaking contaminants loose: Properly cleaning HVAC systems requires removing the sources of contamination. Source removal starts with using one or more agitation devices designed to loosen contaminants from the surface within the duct system.
- Collection of contaminants: The entire HVAC ductwork system is placed under continuous negative pressure (vacuum) to prevent the spread of contaminants. This allows very fine particles to be removed from the system as they become airborne, ensuring these particles are not released into the living space when the system is turned on after cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will cleaning my ducts improve indoor air quality?
Yes! Professional duct cleaning will remove dander, dust, allergens, and harmful pollutants from your air ducts, resulting in cleaner, healthier air. Plus, cleaning your ducts regularly can improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, as it won’t have to work as hard to circulate air.
How often should I get my air ducts cleaned?
Your home’s air ducts should be cleaned every five years. Homeowners with children, pets, respiratory issues, or a compromised immune system may need to get their ducts cleaned more regularly.
How long does duct cleaning take?
The time it takes to clean your ducts efficiently depends on a few factors, such as the size of your home or the number of vents or returns. Typically, our NADCA-certified duct cleaning process takes two to four hours.
Will replacing my HVAC filter keep my ducts clean?
Replacing your air filter every 60 to 90 days can help reduce the amount of dust and debris circulating in your home. However, this basic step isn’t enough to keep your ducts clean. For optimal results, schedule duct cleaning twice a year with F.H. Furr.
Will duct cleaning make a mess in my home?
No! Our technicians are equipped with the highest quality, state-of-the-art duct cleaning equipment. All vacuum devices used in our process use HEPA filters. This filtration is rated at 99.97% at .3 microns.
Will chemicals be used when cleaning my ducts?
No, we do not use any chemicals.
Do the technicians cut holes in the ductwork?
We typically cut a service opening in the supply air duct and in the return air duct to clean effectively. All service opening covers meet or exceed industry standards as defined by NADCA.
