That’s why F.H. Furr is proud to partner with Monumental Honor to establish the 2026 James Mifflin Allied Trades & Continuing Education Scholarship. Together, we’re honoring the legacy of one of Virginia’s Medal of Honor recipients by investing in students who demonstrate character, resilience, and a passion for serving others through the skilled trades.

The skilled trades offer offer purpose, stability, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

The James Mifflin Allied Trades & Continuing Education Scholarship awards $5,000 to help offset tuition, tools, books, certifications, and other educational expenses for students attending an accredited trade school, technical college, community college, university, or continuing education program.

If you’ve overcome challenges, demonstrated leadership, and are pursuing a future in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, construction, manufacturing, or another skilled trade, we encourage you to apply.

About James Mifflin

Richmond native James Mifflin earned the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary courage aboard the U.S.S. Brooklyn during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. Despite intense enemy fire, he remained at his post and faithfully carried out his duties, demonstrating the selfless service and perseverance that define our nation’s highest military honor.

His legacy reminds us that true leadership is built on courage, character, and service; qualities we hope to inspire in every scholarship recipient.

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for students who demonstrate resilience, leadership, and a commitment to serving others while pursuing careers in the skilled trades or continuing education.

Applicants should plan to attend an accredited:

  • Trade school
  • Technical or community college
  • College or university
  • Continuing education or certification program

Application Requirements

Submit:

  • Completed application and resume
  • Personal essay (750–1,500 words)
  • Two letters of recommendation

Scholarship Timeline

  • Applications Open: August 1, 2026
  • Application Deadline: October 19, 2026
  • Scholarship Presentation: November 2026 at the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia
