5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home
Every year when January rolls around, many people around America vow to lose weight, save money, or get more sleep. But what resolutions have you set for your home?
Here are five New Year’s resolutions to help your home function at its best in 2019!
1. Identify Energy Hogs
Energy hogs are the worst offenders to blame for your highest utility bills. Contrary to popular belief, devices still use tons of energy when not in use, even when plugged in! Take a quick look around your home and unplug devices that are rarely (if ever) used. Phantom devices can add up to 10% to your energy costs.
Electronics use a lot of energy. According to ENERGY STAR®, each household in the U.S. has over 20 electronics (some up to 40)! Centralize your electronics on power strips so that you can turn all of your devices on and off at once when not in use and enjoy the savings!
2. Clean the Dryer Vent
Keeping the vent filter clean of dust and debris allows for your dryer to work efficiently. According to the Consumer Safety Commission, dryers cause more than 15,000 household fires each year — most of which ignite due to a clogged vent exhaust! Dryer exhaust vents should be cleaned once a year or more, depending on how much use your dryer undergoes. A telltale sign that your dryer vent needs cleaning is when your clothes begin to take forever to dry!
3. Deep Clean the Carpet
If you want your carpet to look like new for 10-plus years, a yearly deep carpet clean is necessary! Not only will your carpets look fresh and clean, but cleaning your carpets removes pollutants, pet dander, and dust, and helps to prevent mold growth. If you or a family member suffers from allergies, cleaning your carpets regularly can greatly help to reduce symptoms!
4. Flush the Water Heater
Flushing the water heater may not be fun, but it is a necessity to ensure that your water heater has a long life free of sediment buildup.
Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank means it takes longer for the flame to heat the water. This prevents the unit from working efficiently, costing you time and money. With enough buildup in the tank, the tank might stop working altogether.
The best way to remove sediment is by flushing the tank! This can be a DIY project, depending on your skill level, but licensed plumbers are also ready to help!
5. Tune Up the HVAC System
If your home heating system serves as your lifeline to surviving winter, be sure to treat it with proper care and maintenance. Getting a professional tune up can keep your unit operating smoothly and efficiently for years to come! An inspection of both your furnace and AC will prolong the life of your HVAC system. If you continually neglect HVAC maintenance, something will break down sooner or later. Invest in your current HVAC system to avoid investing in a new one.
