When Should You Replace Your HVAC System?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are easy to ignore, but it’s important to be aware of any issues that are occurring with your home’s heating and cooling, so you can ensure proper replacement once the systems become old or damaged. Regular preventive maintenance (recommended biannually) throughout the lifespan of an HVAC system extends its lifespan, but eventually, all systems need a replacement. Know the signs that it’s time for replacement so you can be prepared and keep your HVAC system up to date.

An Old System

Modern air conditioning systems are built to last, but even with regular preventive maintenance, their parts will deteriorate over time. The U.S. Department of Energy currently recommends that HVAC systems be replaced after 10 to 15 years, so if your system is approaching 20, it’s definitely time for a switch.
Additionally, HVAC systems that are 10 or more years old often use a harmful type of refrigerant known as R-22. Updating your system will not only help you cut down on your utility bills but will also benefit the environment and reduce your carbon footprint.

Repairs Cost More than Replacement

All air conditioners and HVAC systems need repairs from time to time. However, there are several instances in which a full replacement is more advantageous than a repair. If the cost of the repair is more than half the cost of your HVAC system, or if your system is already more than 10 years old, you’re better off investing in a replacement.

Safety Hazards

Here at F.H. Furr, we understand that your primary concern for any system operating in your home is the safety of you and your family. With HVAC systems it’s important to always be aware of any signs of a potential safety hazard, such as unusual smells because they can indicate issues such as mold or melting wires. Regular maintenance can work to prevent any carbon monoxide leaks and spot them if they already exist.

Inconsistent Temperatures

Inefficient temperature control in your home indicates a system is not working as it should, or that isn’t right for your space. Uneven or inconsistent temperatures could indicate a host of issues including a damaged thermostat, low fluid levels, cracked ducts, or clogged filters. Spikes in your energy bill could also be a sign that your HVAC system is experiencing a problem.
