If not addressed quickly, these types of malfunctions can put the comfort and health of your family at risk. Luckily, there are steps you can take immediately to try to address the problem.

HVAC systems are complicated equipment that often require specialized knowledge and experience to be able to repair efficiently. However, there are ways to troubleshoot your system that may solve your problem before you ever need to call in a professional repair technician. Trying these strategies first may save you time, money, and hassle.

1. Check that the power is on. Yes, this sounds like the old IT trope telling you to turn your computer off and on again. However, sometimes the simplest solution is the right one. Ensure that there is electricity working in your home.

2. Check your circuit breaker. Circuit switches can often be switched off accidentally, especially if other appliances have been recently installed. Check your home’s circuit breaker to make sure a switch wasn’t inadvertently flipped.

3. Check the batteries in your thermostat. If the buttons on your thermostat aren’t working, it’s likely an issue with the controller itself rather than your HVAC system. Try replacing the batteries with new ones.

4. Check the system’s filter. Filters are an important part of home maintenance that can be easy to forget. These should be changed regularly, every few months. If they’re not, air intake will be inefficient, and your HVAC system won’t be able to function effectively.

5. Check your gas service. Many houses rely on natural gas to heat their homes. If your house is in this category but there’s no gas service in place, your furnace won’t be able to run. Ensure you have an active gas utility account.

6. Check the vents. The airflow going into your heating and air conditioning systems is very important in keeping debris out of your machinery. If you’re experiencing issues with your HVAC system, ensure that the vents are open and clear of blockage and that they have 2 feet of clear space around them.

7. Check your HVAC interior. As a general rule, dirt, dust, and debris make for poor system performance. After it’s been turned off, open up your machine and clean the coils and other interior components to ensure optimal airflow.

8. Check your system’s wires. We hope it doesn’t happen, but an unfortunate round of lawn mowing or weed whacking could slice your electrical cords in two. Make sure faulty cords aren’t behind your HVAC problems.

9. Check your temperature controls. A good rule of thumb is that your air conditioner should be set to no more than 20 degrees Fahrenheit less than the temperature outside. Any more than that, and your issue could be that your system just isn’t capable of handling the heat.

10. Check for exterior obstructions. Walk outside to examine the outside unit of your air conditioner. Make sure there are no leaves, branches, or other debris getting sucked in and blocking airflow. If there are, turn off the unit and use a hose to spray it down from top to bottom. Ideally, you want 3 feet of clear space around the unit.
