The number of sensors is important because you want to have enough coverage for the area you are installing the alarms in. The sensors are the brain of the unit, so the more sensors you have, the better equipped and prepared you’ll be. Usually alarms come with two sensors, but four is a more preferred number for most homeowners.

What kind of sensor?

The best sensors are going to be stainless steel. Stainless steel doesn’t corrode or rust so they will last longer than sensors of another material. Corrosion or rust can prohibit the sensors from working properly or working at all, not to mention making a mess on the surface of the area you are attempting to protect!

Is the alarm loud?

Think of where your water alarms are going to be located. Most likely they will be in areas that are hidden away or not right around your everyday living area. They could be in the basement, laundry room, in cabinets or cupboards, etc. The volume of the alarm needs to be LOUD so that you will be able to hear it! If it isn’t loud enough, you could run the risk of not hearing it and if an alarm isn’t heard to bring attention to a problem then it isn’t doing its job well at all!

How close is the sensor to the surface being monitored?

Plain and simple – sensors need to touch the surface they are monitoring! If your sensor sits 1/2 inch off of the surface being monitored, you could potentially have 1/2 inch of water in your home before you even get alerted to it! If the room you are installing the alarm is carpeted, we recommend putting the sensor down through the carpet because the water could soak the pad and you wouldn’t know until the water got high enough to get through the carpet!

Is the alarm quality made?

Obviously, as with everything for your home, you want the best. Make sure you’re getting a water alarm with a high volume and numerous sensors. You want an alarm that can stand up to use but also look nice in your home!
