For anything in your life that you consider valuable, you hire people to take good care of it. Maybe it’s the excellent pediatrician on speed dial who can give advice in a pinch, or your trusty mechanic that you’ve taken your family vehicles to for years. When you value someone or something, you put it in the hands of a person or company that you can trust.

So when it comes to your home, whose hands are you putting it in? If you need service, and all home’s require annual maintenance on their comfort systems, then you’ll likely want to shop around for the best, most reputable company out there, with quality technicians to care for your home. At F.H. Furr, we believe that the technicians that we send to our customers homes should have these three, very important qualities:

PVC Pipes - DIY Project(s)

If you have some old PVC pipes lying around the garage, don’t throw them away! There are a few DIY projects that you can do to turn those plain boring pipes into something useful around the home.

1. Shoe Rack! Who doesn’t need one of these? If you have flats, sandals, kids shoes, and sneakers that always seem to pile up around the door, grab some of the larger PVC pipes, industrial glue, and decorative wall paper. Wrap the wall paper around the pipes to give it a modern, new feel, glue them how you want and next thing you know, you have a new shoe rack to put the piles of shoes in.

2.  Ladies! Do you have tons of washi tape or ribbon cluttering up a drawer? You will need thin round PVC pipe for this project. Create racks and slide the ribbon, washi tape or other items you may have and start lining them up. That way you can see what you have and it will stay organized.

3. Men! Tidy up your work shed or garage with odds and ends of your leftover PVC pipes. Screw a piece at the top of a flat board against an empty wall and one piece of pipe at the bottom. Now you have a place to put shovels, rakes, hoes, etc neatly and easily accessible.

4. Now this one will take a bit more pieces but if you got them, this will be worth making. You can make a drying rack for towels, bathing suits, clothes, and toys after a day of playing in the water. That way you can keep your hardwood floors and carpets nice and dry.

5. Declutter your workspace. This DIY only requires pieces and they don’t have to be all the same size. Glue the pieces together so they lay on the desk evenly, paint if desired, and then you can put scissors, pens, sharpies, paperclips, erasers, and whatever else into the slots where it will stay organized and decluttered.

6. Create a garden hose holder! Attach small PVC pipes together creating a rack, that will stand up and if you are feeling fancy you can even attach two wheels for easier use. That way your hose is off the ground and accessible next time you are ready to use it.

Make Your Home Energy Efficient This Winter!

Winter is right around the corner and that means higher energy bills are too. During the colder, less sun months we tend to leave our lights on longer, which contributes to the dreaded monthly energy bill. It may not seem like it, but there is a bright side. There are a few tips to cut cost, that you can get started on right now!

INSULATE: Instead of adding layers and blankets. Add insulation to your attic, basements, and crawlspaces. This is basically a blanket or another sweatshirt for your home. Make your home more comfortable and lower energy bills.

Are Window A/C Units Leaving You With High Electric Bills?

We all know that summer heat can be brutal, and without air conditioning, it’s downright dangerous.

For homeowners whose HVAC systems have recently bit the dust, the thought of installing a central air conditioning system can seem overwhelming, expensive, and time-consuming. You might think that utilizing a window unit is cheaper, easier to install, and doesn't require a service technician, and you’d be right if you only need one window unit. However, if you need 2 or 3 window units to cool an entire house, they quickly surpass the energy consumption costs that a whole home HVAC unit would use.

Water Alarms & How They Could Save Your Home!

Your home is likely your biggest investment, and you strive to keep it safe from disaster. Most homeowners realize that water damage is a huge danger for their homes, and basement flooding is one of the most destructive and expensive problems you can encounter.

Flooding is not only an immediate danger, but the after effects of water damage are long lasting. Not only do you have to deal with the immense work to clear out the water, but the dampness can linger, causing mildew, mold, and rot, all of which are dangerous to the home as well as its inhabitant’s health. It’s best to avoid damages like this if at all possible!

Is Your Air Conditioner Freezing? Does It Need Repaired?

Cooling problems can affect your comfort and your utility bills. If you are experiencing ice formation on your air conditioning unit and suspect it may be due to the outdoor temperature, try turning off the AC at night to see if this solves the problem—if so, good news, you don’t need to call for an AC repair.

Are You A Victim Of Low Humidity?

Humidity plays a huge role the comfort of your home and family. The recommended indoor relative humidity level is 45%, yet the average Northern American home can be four times below that recommended level! When you combine existing low humidity levels with the home heating season, it can result in a myriad of indoor problems!

Are you noticing cold-like symptoms that just won’t quit, static electricity and higher energy bills to boot?  Overly dry air absorbs essential moisture from your body as well as items in your home, it can cause health issues as well as damages to your home!

MERV Rating-What Does That Mean?

When looking to upgrade your HVAC system filter, you might see the term "MERV Rating" in your research. What are MERV ratings and why are they important?

Let’s start at square one. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and it sets the standards for the overall effectiveness of air filters. The MERV value determines the amount of  this dust particles and pollutants that are getting through the filter and into your home. Filters can have a wide range of MERV ratings, the higher the rating, the better the filtration!

Clean Your Ducts!

Why? Because to put it simply, they get dirty!

Not only do dust and dirt accumulate in the ductwork, other air pollutants such as: pet hair and dander, smoke and cooking odors, and microbial growth will cause the air flow to be slower and ducts to be less efficient! If you have someone in your home who is more sensitive to these contaminants, and/or suffer from Allergies and Asthma than there is no question if you should get this service.

Hard Water VS Soft Water

What exactly does it mean when people say, “Your water is hard”? This question makes you stop to think, is it safe to drink? Wash our clothes? Take a shower? The short answer is…yes.

The difference is hard water contains a regulated amount of dissolved minerals such as; calcium, lime, chalk, and magnesium. Where as soft water has been treated and filtrated to the point where it only contains sodium.

Understanding what’s going on inside your electrical panel?

We know it can be difficult to determine what you are looking at exactly, but once you learn it, you won’t forget!

Since the utility companies distributes electricity to each circuit that supply all the lights, outlets, appliances, and all of our wired devices with power, we have the ability to shut off our home’s electric in our panel of switches and wires, EXCEPT for the currents that’s still coming in from the utility company.

Stay COOL This Summer!

Maintaining your air conditioner this summer is your key to a happy sun-filled summer! After being outside all day enjoying the weather, it’s always nice to come inside to a comfortable house to cool down and relax!

During the cold months, our A/C units collect dust and dirt, making them less efficient, which turns into additional costs in utility bills.  😖 Also, the lack of maintenance done to your A/C unit could affect your heat pump and air handler to the point of breaking. At this point, you can say “bye bye” to that summer vacation!

Getting routine maintenance will not only save you money on energy cost, but it will also extend the life of your unit! ✅ Win-Win!

It’s also a good idea to get it checked before heading out on vacation! With the curtains pulled, lights and fans off, doors locked, AND your A/C happens to break? That is the perfect situation for mold growth due to humidity levels rising. Yes, MOLD! Gross 🤢

Let’s prevent all of the above and put an A/C inspection on your list of to-do’s this Spring!

Our service technician will perform a complete 25-step Signature Multipoint Cooling/HVAC Reliability and Safety Inspection! It starts with an inspection of capacitors for leaks and rust and ends with checking the overall operation of your system.
