Allergies

Why suffer when you don’t have to?
“Allergy Season" can be a tough time for many people. Studies show that more than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. And, while some suffer through short-term seasonal allergies, a growing number experience chronic, year-round allergies. The most common symptom of chronic allergies is rhinitis which causes inflammation of the nasal membranes. It is more commonly known as “hay fever”. Hay fever often exhibits itself through an itchy runny nose, congestion and sneezing.

Allergies are simply immune system reactions to substances that are harmless to most people. Common substances causing allergic reactions include: dust mites, dust, pollen, mold, mildew and pet dander. Allergic reactions range from mild to severe and can take on many forms including: headache, fatigue, asthma, eczema (inflammation of the skin), rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis (watery eyes).

Solutions for Allergies Suffers
Depending on your allergies, different products can be recommended to help alleviate allergy symptoms.

Whole-home Air Cleaners: Capture and eliminate allergen particles such as: dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, dust mites and more. This can significantly assist in relieving allergic discomfort.

Dehumidifiers: Help prevent mold from spreading and relieve discomfort from allergies due to mold and other fungi.

Whole-home ventilation system: Will exchange indoor air filled with allergens, such as dust and pet dander, with allergen-free outside air.

Asthma

What good is the air you breathe if you can’t breathe it?
With an estimated 34 million Americans having been diagnosed with asthma, chances are that you know at least one person suffering from this condition. The incidents of asthma have risen dramatically in the past 20 years, a period far too short to reflect any real significant changes in the gene pool. This supports the important role that environmental influences (allergy, infection, lifestyle, and diet) have on the development of asthma.
Inhaling allergens frequently is the cause of an asthma attack. Common allergens linked to these asthma attacks are dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold and mildew, odors, and smoke.
Common symptoms of asthma include chronic coughing and wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness, rapid breathing, and frequent respiratory infections.

Solutions for Asthma Suffers
Unfortunately, asthma is a condition that cannot be cured. The good news is that you can help control asthma attacks by controlling your environment.

Whole-House Air Cleaners and Whole-House Dehumidifiers
These systems effectively remove many asthma-causing allergens and particles found in most homes. If anyone in your home suffers from asthma, these solutions should be seriously considered.

Bacteria & Viruses

Keeping them under control before they control you.

If you are like most homeowners, you are very concerned about protecting your family and property from invaders. Have you considered protecting them from invisible invaders? It is true, germs are everywhere, and they are not always harmful. But, it is possible for bacteria and viruses to increase to harmful even deadly levels within your home, your sanctuary. To keep your home safe, germ growth within the air must be controlled.

The key to decreasing bacterial and viral loads in your home is to systematically move and filter the air while ensuring humidity levels are within healthful parameters. Maintaining adequate moisture content is key to ensuring that germs are unable to build up to harmful levels within your home.

Another important aspect to keeping your home safe and healthy is preventing the air from becoming too dry. If you and your loved ones are breathing air that is overly dry, you will be more susceptible to sickness and disease. Your mucous membranes, nasal passages particularly, need to stay moist to prevent cracking. It is through these tiny cracks that bacteria can enter and cause infection.

Solutions for Bacteria and Viruses
F.H. Furr offers and installs a series of state of the art systems which control moisture levels and keep the air moving efficiently. These systems will help reduce the germ loads in the environments where you live.

Air Cleaners: Continuously filtering and removing harmful germ molecules from the air which passes through your heating/cooling system and flows throughout your home.

Dehumidifiers: Pulling excess moisture out of the air, keeping germ growth to a minimum.

Humidifiers: Supplying the air with adequate moisture, keeping nasal passages from cracking.

Ventilation systems: Bringing in and filtering fresh, outside air and taking out stale, musty inside air.

Dust Mites

The invisible monster.
Dust mites, only .5mm in length, are nearly impossible to see and are found in almost every home. They live in the fine layer of dust that continually settles on household items. Remarkably, up to 500 dust mites can be found in a single gram of dust. Since the 1960s, dust mites have been linked to allergies and are know to contribute to medical disorders such as asthma, eczema and rhinitis.

Dust mites congregate in exfoliated human skin cells, pet dander, insect scales, plant fibers, pollen, fungi and bacteria. Those tend to accumulate in bed linens, pillows, upholstery, and carpeting.

Solutions for Dust Mites
Although no home can ever be completely free of dust mites, F.H. Furr has solutions that can effectively and immediately reduce the quantity of dust mites along with their preferred food sources by installing these state of the art systems.

Whole-house Air Cleaner: Removing the particles in which dust mites thrive from the air.

Whole-house Dehumidifier: Keeping the air’s moisture content at an uncomfortable level for dust mites.

Mold

The cause of odor and poor air quality.
Mold reproduces by means of tiny particles called spores. These spores are too small to be seen by the naked eye and float throughout the air, indoors and out. Growth is ignited when a spore lands on any moist surface of your home, including your ductwork. As soon as mold starts growing in your home, it has the potential to cause health problems to you and your loved ones.

Exposure can result simply by inhaling mold spores but can also include touching/swallowing of molds. Resulting health problems can vary greatly but usually include the following: allergies, asthma, nasal and sinus congestion or infection, coughing, sore throat, skin and eye irritation.

Solutions to prevent mold growth
The most effective way to prevent mold in your home is to control the environment in which it thrives. This means minimizing excess moisture. Thankfully, there are products that can prevent the growth of mold.

Whole-home Dehumidifier: Removing up to 11 gallons of excess moisture every day.

Whole-home Air Cleaner: Removing harmful particles from the air and trapping mold spores, effectively reducing health risks to you and your family.

Odors

Unpleasant but important indicators of potentially serious problems.
There are so many different things that cause odors within your home. Whether it is pets, sweaty sports clothing, or pungent foods, you most likely do not want your home to have these unpleasant odors. The most common solution for making your home smell pleasant is air freshener, which is an inadequate way to deal with odor problems.

Odors are not only a nuisance, but are also indicative of larger, health-threatening issues inside your home’s air. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals which evaporate into potentially harmful gases and are frequently identified by odor. Molds and mildew are associated with stale, musty odors and are known aggravators of allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.

Solutions for Removing Odors
Odors are mostly an issue due to poor ventilation in your home. If odors have nowhere to escape, they will linger in your home, compounding one upon the other, making your home an unpleasant place to live.

Ventilator: Exchanging foul, stale, and potentially toxic indoor air with clean, fresh outdoor air all year round.

Dehumidifiers: Fighting the growth of mold and mildew, preventing musty odors from forming associated with these fungi, from your basement to your attic and everywhere in between.

Air Cleaners: Tackling odors produced by cooking grease, chimney and tobacco smoke.

Too Dry

Winter heating can cause your home to feel too dry.
Heating your home during the winter months can cause the air to become too dry. Static electricity is the most obvious sign that the air in your home is too dry. Other signs include dry skin, dry cough, sore throat, nose bleeds, frequent colds, and worsened allergy and asthma symptoms. Another aspect which becomes affected is the “health” of your home.

If the indoor humidity in your home is less than 30%, it is too dry. With overly dry air, woodwork and furniture may begin to crack, and pianos go out of tune faster. Also, static can build up and ruin electronic components and dry goods become stale faster.

Solutions for Too Dry
There is no reason for you and your home to continue suffering from the affects of air that is overly dry. Let the professional technicians at F.H. Furr install a premier system which best suits your home’s needs.

Humidifier: Regulating the humidity levels inside your home even as the external levels fluctuate, preventing damage to your health and your home.

Too Humid

Causing discomfort and damage within your home.
Does your home smell musty or feel too warm in the summer, even with the thermostat set at a comfortable temperature? Or, have you noticed the woodwork within your home starting to warp and buckle? If so, the moisture content of your home’s air is too great. A normal humidity level is around 40%.

In dryer areas of the country, it is possible for a heating/cooling system to adequately remove excess moisture from the air. But, in our region where the outdoor humidity is much higher, most systems are not adequate enough to remove the excess moisture. As a result, most homes need a dehumidifier, which will not only make you more comfortable and prevent health problems, but will also lengthen the life of your heating/cooling system.

Volatile Organic Compounds

Inhaling chemicals is damaging.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are found in everyday household products and emit vapors into the air even under normal conditions. These vapors are potentially harmful and may have short and long term adverse health effects. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), concentration of VOCs can be up to ten times higher indoors than outdoors. As a result, you and your family are at risk of being exposed to higher concentrations of VOCs.

There is a wide array of products (numbering in the thousands) that emit VOCs. Here are just a few that you may use in your home: paint, paint thinner, air freshener, aerosol spray, candles, disinfectant, adhesive, carpeting, pressed wood furniture, and newspapers.

There are many health problems caused by repeated exposure to high concentration levels of VOCs, such as headaches, nausea, asthma, fatigue, allergies, cancer, memory loss, and damage to the liver and kidneys.
