YOUR HEAT PUMP SYSTEM
What it isA heat pump is a unit which provides two equally important services to your home: heating and cooling. Typically, there are two parts that make up the system: an indoor unit known as the air handler and an outdoor unit called the compressor. The compressor circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the indoor and outdoor units.
How it worksA heat pump heats and cools your home’s air through the process of refrigeration. When cooling your home, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and then moves the heat outside. When heating your home, it takes the heat energy which is present outside and transfers it to the inside of your home. Since it moves the heat instead of generating heat, your home’s heating and cooling system works much more effectively to keep energy costs lower.
A heat pump works best in moderate climates and can keep your home warm even as temperatures drop into the low 20s. Since some heat pumps can be less efficient in extremely cold weather, it is important to have the correct heat pump system installed. If your home’s system is struggling to heat efficiently, energy costs will be much higher.
