YOUR CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEM
What it isCentral heating systems have a primary heating appliance, such as a furnace, typically located in your basement or garage. A furnace consists of four main components: a burner, heat exchanger, blower, and flue. Depending on your situation, region, and needs, you can choose from heating systems fueled by gas or oil, or a hybrid packaged system that can use both fuel types.
How it worksCombustion gases are generated by the burners in your furnace and passed over a heat exchanger. Air from your home is warmed as it blows across the heat exchanger and distributed throughout your home by a series of ducts.
During warm seasons your heating system works with your central air conditioning. Air is cooled as it blows across your air conditioning unit’s cooling coil, which is usually attached to the exhaust of the furnace, and then sent through the same ductwork throughout your home.
