Too large
A system that is too large will cool or heat your house quickly, but the system will need to turn on and off often (short cycle) and you may still not be comfortable. In the summer, the temperature may drop to the desired temperature quickly, but the moisture from the air that makes you uncomfortable and sticky will not have been removed. Short cycling is a stress on the system that can shorten the life of your equipment and also increase your utility bills.

Too small
A system that is too small will run the air conditioning constantly in the summer and the furnace in winter. This will lead to higher energy bills and shorten the life of your system from overuse.
